I just stepped up my wife game. Big time. How? I made a lasagna yesterday. And you know what else? We ate it at 5 p.m. like real old people and called it "supper." M. couldn't have been happier. Really, he was beaming. And do you know what? It was seriously tasty. And you know what else? It was kind of healthy - i used whole wheat pasta and turkey. Um, hello wife of the year. Crap, I may have some competition.
Later, when we were 3 lasagna pieces deep, i proudly asked M. if he ever thought his wife would make him homemade lasagna, as if to ask if he ever thought he'd walk on the moon. Without batting an eyelash he responded "Yes." Oh, well, i guess i just never expected to be the kind of wife that could make a lasagna given that just last year I opened a can of refried beans and called it Mexican night.

Hi Dana,
Hope all is well. So I LOVE your blog, but I forget about it...and then when I'm on Lauren's blog, I always see yours and get to be amused again.
So this entry really rang true for me. I have been learning to cook over the last six months or so and I too feel like wife of the year when I: 1) make something and 2) it's edible. Not really high standards, I know, but you gotta start somewhere. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book called How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. He's the NYTimes.com "Minimalist" chef, and the book really does tell you how to cook almost everything. Check it out---best $22 you'll ever spend.
