my cell phone rang at 9:10 this morning. I was in the office kitchen, getting a bowl for my cereal, when i heard the loud ring and hurried to answer it so as not to disturb my easily disturbed co-workers. When i first saw it was my mom calling, i had a instantaneous wave of panic that something bad had caused her to call me so early on my cell phone but before i even answered it, i came to the real reason why she had called - to make sure i was still alive.
This is the new norm. When M. is away, my parents insist i call them when i enter my apartment building at the end of the day and that i stay on the line until i am safely locked inside my home. I don't mind this so much since i do enjoy speaking with them and because it does give me piece of mind too, if i'm getting home late and brooklyn is extra quiet but the follow-up morning call always throws me for a loop.
So, i picked up the phone and sure enough, my mom didn't have any message to rely or any news to deliver. When i asked her if she had called to make sure i "had made it through the night," she answered honestly, "yes." She use to lie and or dance around the fact that the sole purpose of her call was to make sure i made it to work in one, unharmed piece. Now, at least she's honest and i appreciate that.
So, hi, i made it! woohoo!
